GROWING HERBS IN THE GARDEN

Herbs are so easy to grow in the garden or even on a balcony, they do really well in a pot, most of the herbs go underground for Winter but they come back in Spring.

One of the earliest herbs is the wild garlic, you can use the leafs and the flowers in a salad. Once you have it in your garden it will come back every year. When the flowers set seed it will disappear soon after and they go underground until next year in early Spring. They selfseed so you’ll have more every year. They do like a moist soil and a place in the shade, but actually they grow everywhere I think.

CHIVES

This one is chives, also good to use in salads, it gets lovely little pink flowers later on. Also a good grower, in my garden it has a place in the sun and it grows like mad.

This herb has the prettiest blue flowers, you can use them in drinks or salads, they tast a bit like cucumber. People also use them in ice cubes. It is one of the easiest to grow, they too selfseed but they are easy to remove if you have too many of them.

I have more herbs in the garden but I’ll talk about them some other time. I love it when I can go to the garden and pluck them to add to a salad or others you can use in soup, or make tea of it.

You really don’t need a green thumb to grow a few herbs, you don’t even need to have a garden as they will also be happy on a balcony.

Have a great weekend all !

WE HAD SNOW TODAY !

A few days ago we had about 20 C°, today we have 0 C°and snow! Luckily it didn’t stay long as it wasn’t cold enough, so I took a few pictures in the garden early this morning, no sun, no blue sky alas.

The temperature is supposed to go up again slightly but nowhere near the 20 C° we had. You get so easily adjusted to eating outside, enjoying the sun, working in the garden…. it was too sonn but it felt sooo good !!

Have a great weekend !!

RECENT PICTURES FROM THE GARDEN.

As we had warm and sunny weather lately, the garden came to live again, earlier than usual, it was unusually warm for March. But the good weather is about to end and Mr Frost will be back. We urgently need rain as everything is bone dry, despite all the rain we had during Winter. I have sandy soil in my garden so it rapidly dries when we get sun and wind.

SKIMMIA

The bees are having a ball in my skimmia bush, I love the sound of the bees buzzing. And the flowers smell so nice. This small bush is planted next to our terrace so it is nice sitting on our terrace with a coffee or a drink at the moment.

And my chives is on the grow again.

Have a great week all !

SORRY

Sorry for being absent a lot in the past month’s. Winter was grey , wet and soft and it was almost impossible to take nice pictures. In fact we had no real Winter, no snow, no ice, just a few light night frosts. March has been like real Spring although it is still Winter. The sky is bright blue, the sun shines and we enjoy the sun a lot. Nature starts to wake up and the first Spring flowers are in bloom. I just hope we don’t get heave frost in April or May, everything is possible and this will do a lot of damage.

TINY FLOWERS OF NARCISSUS TETE A TETE

Always on of the first in bloom and always reliable, you plant the bulbs in the soil and they come up year after year. So easy !

AMELANCHIER OR JUNEBERRY BUDS

Another one you can always rely on, the amalanchier tree, also called juneberry, I don’t know why they call it juneberry as it always flowers at the end of march ! In a few weeks time it will be covered in small white flowers and it will be buzzing with bees. Look at that blue sky we have at the moment . So much better than grey.

Have a great weekend !

NEW LIFE

Outside it’s chilly, windy and wet but it is too warm for Winter so lots of plants and tree’s are starting to grow again. But the problem is that the weather can change for the worse and we can still expect snow and severe frost untill mid May and some years even later. Then all that new life that is growing now will be dead but most plants can grow again later in the year.

My garden looks dull, apart from the evergreens there is nothing to see. I had lots of rosebottles and red berries but they are all eaten by the birds now.

LICHEN AND MOSS
NEW BUDS
EUONYMUS EMERALD AND GOLD, ALWAYS LOOKS AS IF THE SUN IS SHINING ON THIS LITTLE BRIGHT BUSH
SKIMMIA, ALWAYS THE FIRST TO BLOOM, HERE THEY ARE STILL IN BUD BUT THEY’LL SOON START TO BLOOM
I HAVE 2 OF THESE HUGE AUCUBA BUSHES IN MY GARDEN AND IN WINTER THEY LOOK GOOD BETWEEN ALL THE GREY AND BROWN

HAVE A GREAT WEEK AND TAKE CARE.

STILL IN BLOOM

STILL IN BLOOM, ANNUAL MALVA

In Spring I bought seeds of this annual malva as I love white flowers. This one is really easy to grow and it blooms for months on end, the big white flowers don’t turn brown when they fade away and that is a plus, you don’t have to remove the old brown flowers as you often have to do with white flowering plants. They also gave me lots of seeds, even the seedbuds are pretty so next year I am going to sow loads of these flowers and I’ll have lots of seeds to give away too.

For me this is winner !

Have a great weekend all and enjoy your garden if you can.
