IT’S FIG TIME !

The figs are ripening, not all at once but everyday a few. It looks like a good fig-year, last year I had very few figs as we had a couple of late frosts. Normally a fig gives 3 harvests a year in hot countries with long Summers but here in the North of Europe just the first harvest gets ripe, that is when the first lot doesn’t freeze off in early Spring. Tiny figs appear in Autumn so when we get severe frosts in Winter or early in Spring the first harvest is gone. The tree gets figs but they don’t get ripe enough over here.

They taste lovely with a bit of dried ham or with a bit of cream cheese, or both ! Or you can make jam, just fig jam or combined with one or two other fruits.

THIS IS NOT THE WELL KNOWN BROWN TURKEY BUT THIS FIG IS CALLED “WHITE OF MARSEILLE
THESE FIGS JUST GET A BIT OF A BLUSH WHEN THEY ARE RIPE.

Did any of you grow fruit in the garden this year?

I hope you are all doing okay !!

  1. I have to admit I rarely — if ever — eat figs. No real reason — probably just never had them in my youth. And I haven’t grown any fruit this year either. But I DO have a cactus I put outside this year and it’s flowering in a ring near the top! That excites me!

    1. Some fruits are really easy to grow. With figs it is super easy, you buy a small fig tree, put it in the ground and give it a bit of chalk in Spring. 😀
